As temperatures drop and winter weather arrives, pet owners need to take extra precautions to keep their furry friends safe and comfortable. Cold weather poses unique challenges from hypothermia risks to paw injuries from ice and chemical deicers. Here are essential winter safety tips for your pet.

Recognize Hypothermia Warning Signs

Watch for signs of hypothermia including shivering, lethargy, weak pulse, and difficulty walking. Short-haired breeds, small dogs, puppies, and senior pets are particularly vulnerable to cold temperatures. If you notice these symptoms, warm your pet gradually with blankets and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Protect Paws from Ice and Salt

Ice, snow, and chemical deicers can seriously damage your pet's paw pads. Consider using pet-safe booties for walks, or apply protective paw balm before heading outdoors. Always wipe paws thoroughly after walks to remove ice balls, salt, and chemicals that could be harmful if your pet licks them off.

Adjust Outdoor Exercise Duration

While regular exercise remains important, you may need to shorten outdoor sessions during extreme cold. Use your PetBase GPS collar to monitor outdoor activity duration and ensure your pet isn't overexposed to harsh conditions. Supplement outdoor time with indoor play and mental stimulation activities.

Provide Warm Shelter

Even outdoor pets need adequate protection from winter elements. Ensure shelters are well-insulated, elevated off the ground, and positioned away from wind. Provide plenty of dry bedding that's changed regularly, and consider heated pet pads for additional warmth during particularly cold nights.

Antifreeze Awareness

Antifreeze is extremely toxic to pets but has a sweet taste that attracts them. Store all antifreeze products securely and clean up any spills immediately. Even small amounts can be fatal. If you suspect your pet has ingested antifreeze, contact your veterinarian or pet poison control immediately.

With proper winter precautions and monitoring through your PetBase collar, you can ensure your pet stays safe, healthy, and comfortable throughout the cold season.
